Preparedness Basics

Preparing the workforce to deal effectively with public health and other emergencies that may impact where older adults live represents an immediate need as we face an aging nation. Of more concern is the fact that little emphasis in disaster training focuses on age-appropriate care for senior populations or on special needs of older adults exposure to potential dangers. The PREPARE Basics training is relevant for HUD, LIHTC, Senior Living, AL, LTC, and CCRC/Life Plan Community operators, owners, management team--inclusive of Service Coordinators and First Responders. A comprehensive, workable Emergency Operations plan is an important tool to assist in improving emergency preparedness and responses by managers and staff in senior living (SL) and long term care (LTC) settings. Attendees of this session will:
  • Learn what goes into an Emergency Operations Plan
  • Identify the essential components of the Basic Plan
  • Describe key areas requiring special consideration for SL/LTC communities
  • Identify who should be involved in Emergency Planning at their community/facility (using the Incident Command System)
  • Identify areas of vulnerability by conducting a risk assessment of their Senior Living or Long Term Care community
